Chef’d meal kit delivery service has recently partnered with California prunes to launch several meal kits featuring this delicious dried fruit. I had the opportunity to try the service, and I don’t think I’ll ever look at prunes the same way again.

Created by twin sisters and registered dietitian nutritionists Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakatos, The Nutrition Twins®, the new meal kits are available at Chefd.com/CaliforniaPrunes. There are three different recipes that uniquely incorporate prunes into the dinner menu:

  • Asian Chicken and California Prunes Lettuce Wraps with Sesame Green Beans
  • Chicken Tacos with California Prunes Salsa and Refried Black Beans
  • Moroccan Spiced Shrimp Skewers with Toasted Chickpeas and California Prunes & Quinoa Salad

I had a hard time picking which one I wanted to try, since they all sound so good. I had never thought of including prunes in any of these types of recipes. After some deliberation about which recipe my family might enjoy the most, I decided on the Asian Chicken and California Prunes Lettuce Wraps.

The kit arrived on my doorstep in a large box. The ingredients were well insulated, and everything was pre-measured. When it came time to prepare the meal, it only took about 5 minutes to chop the ingredients and stir together the sauce. It’s a simple recipe with delicious teriyaki flavor, and the prunes are a great complement to the sauce.

My whole family enjoyed this meal. The texture of the chicken was perfect, as it had been cooked using the sous vide method prior to shipping. I held back on some of the crushed red pepper that was supposed to go along with the green beans, and the flavor was great with that one modification. We all loved the flavor of the chicken lettuce wraps exactly how they were designed in the recipe.

The California Prunes Difference

California Prunes is the first Chef’d partner to enlist registered dietitians to create their meal kit recipes. I like knowing that these recipes are carefully crafted with health benefits in mind. Research suggests that eating a serving of prunes every day may help support healthy bones and help maintain good digestive health. Prunes include polyphenols, which act as antioxidants. A good dose of antioxidants in your diet can help with heart, eye, memory, and immune system issues.
