Fill a large pot of water and set it on the stove to boil.
While the water comes to a boil, heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Cook the sausage over medium heat, turning the pieces a few times for even cooking. Remove the cooked sausage and set aside. Leave the juices in the pan.
Place the garlic, yellow pepper, and artichoke hearts in the pan. Saute over medium low heat until the pepper begins to soften, about 3 minutes. Add the cooked sausage back to the skillet, along with the tomatoes, tomato sauce, and maple syrup. Season with salt and pepper, and chop up the whole tomatoes with a spatula. Simmer over medium heat, uncovered, for 10 minutes, or until thickened to your liking.
While the sauce is simmering, cook the pasta according to the package directions. Grate some fresh Parmesan cheese for serving.
When the sauce is done simmering, taste it and add more salt, pepper, and/or maple syrup as needed. (Remember that the parm will give it a little extra saltiness.)
Drain the pasta and divide it into pasta bowls. Top with sauce, Parmesan, and basil. Serve warm.
