These air fryer potatoes are so easy and delicious! This recipe is so much healthier than deep fried potatoes, but it tastes just as good.

Fried potatoes are a regular side dish in my meal planning rotation. Whether I’m thinking about breakfast or dinner, they’re one of the first things that come to mind when I’m trying to fill my family’s plates.

I’ve been making this home fries recipe for years. But lately, I’ve been looking for a faster and easier way to get potatoes on the table. Enter the air fryer.

There’s no need to deep fry potatoes in oil when you can air fry them instead. I just use a little avocado oil to help get that crunchy exterior. These are so quick easy to make, and the flavor is delicious.

How Do You Cook Potatoes in an Air Fryer?

Different kinds of potatoes can be air fried. My air fryer has a basket that rotates while cooking. For roasted potatoes or potato chips, I put the potatoes in this basket so I don’t need to flip them while they cook. If you don’t have a rotating basket with your fryer, you can flip the potatoes by hand about halfway through the cook time for even browning.

To make air fryer potato wedges, I recommend cooking them in a single layer and flipping them part way through cooking.

Whether you’re making roasted potatoes, chips, or wedges, you’ll want to use a high cooking temperature. I like to cook them at 450 degrees, but anything above 400 degrees will work. Simply coat the potatoes with a bit of oil and whatever seasoning you’d like before adding the potatoes to the air fryer.

These air fryer potatoes have such an easy process, and the result are healthier than regular fried potatoes.

Air Fryer Potatoes Tips

Potato Preparation: Chop your potatoes uniformly so they’ll cook evenly. I like to cut them into ¾-inch cubes for roasted air fryer potatoes. I don’t peel my potatoes since lots of nutrients are in the skin, and I like the texture of the crispy skin on these potatoes.

Cook Time: After cooking for 15 to 20 minutes, stick a fork in one of the potatoes to see if it’s tender. If not, cook for another 5 minutes and check again. If you’re cooking your potatoes in a single layer on an air fryer rack, they’ll be finished more quickly than if you use a rotating basket like I do. My batch takes about 25 minutes in the basket.

Extra Flavor: You can add a garnish of fresh herbs after cooking if you’d like. Chives, parsley, and basil are all delicious. And for a bit of extra flavor, sprinkle some fresh parmesan on the potatoes while they’re still warm.

It's so easy to make potatoes in an air fryer!
Prep Time:5 minutes
Cook Time:20 minutes
Total Time:25 minutes

Recommended Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs potatoes chopped
  • 1 tbs avocado oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • Scrub the potatoes and chop them into 3/4 inch cubes.
  • Stir the potatoes and avocado oil in a large bowl. In a small bowl, stir together the salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Add the seasonings to the potatoes and stir to coat evenly.
  • Cook in an air fryer basket at 450 degrees for 15 to 25 minutes. (The longer cook time is needed if you’re using a rotating basket.) Check the potatoes after 15 minutes, and cook for an additional five minutes if they’re not yet tender. Keep checking them every few minutes after that. They’re done when they’re nicely browned and crispy on the outside, and tender in the middle.
