This is everything you need to know about coconut oil popcorn. It can be flavored with sweet or savory toppings, and it’s a frugal, healthy snack that everyone loves.
When my family cut back on dairy a few years ago, our first concern was popcorn. How were we supposed to survive without our favorite evening snack?
As it turned out, we had nothing to worry about. Coconut oil is the perfect topping for popcorn. The rich flavor is actually quite similar to buttered popcorn.
Basic Vegan Coconut Oil Popcorn Recipe
I make lots of different varieties of flavored popcorn for an easy snack. Even without the extra toppings, plain popcorn coated with melted coconut oil and topped with salt and pepper is delicious on its own.
To make this easy snack, simply pop a half cup of kernels using your desired method. I use an air popper, but you can also pop the kernels on the stovetop if you don’t have an air popper.
Once the kernels are popped, drizzle the popcorn with about 3 tablespoons of melted coconut oil. You can use your hands to gently mix it. Then sprinkle the popcorn with salt and pepper to taste, and add a bit of fresh grated parmesan cheese if desired.
Price Breakdown
A simple batch of popcorn topped with coconut oil, salt, and pepper costs about $.85, and it yields about 16 cups of popcorn.
This comes out to $.11 per two-cup serving of vegan popcorn. It’s one of the most frugal whole food snacks you can make.
