In my house, homemade applesauce is a must-eat treat during the fall. My family enjoys the chunky version warm out of the pot. It’s one of the main motivators for our annual apple picking excursion.

To make things a little easier this year, we made our applesauce in the Instant Pot. We still had to do the work of cutting and peeling the apples, but we didn’t have to babysit the applesauce while it was cooking.

Instant Pot Applesauce Tips

With a pressure cooker, you can just toss the ingredients in the pot and forget about it until it’s done. I like to mash it with a potato masher, but you could also blend it with a food processor or blender if you want a smooth version.

It’s important to let the pressure release naturally once the 5 minute cook time is over. If you try to do a quick release, you may get a volcano of applesauce shooting out of the pressure valve all over your cabinets. Trust me, it’s not a fun clean-up process.

If you’re feeling extra motivated, make a batch of homemade apple cider vinegar with the apple scraps, and use the leftover applesauce to make applesauce bread.

Recommended Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs apples cored and peeled ($4.98)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tbs lemon juice ($.08)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon ($.01)
  • 1/4 tsp ginger ($.05)

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in the Instant Pot. Cover the pot and turn the valve to Sealing. Press Manual, and adjust the high pressure cook time to 5 minutes.
  • Once the pot comes to pressure and the 5 minute cook time is finished, let the pot release the pressure naturally. (If you try a quick release, you may get applesauce spitting out of the valve all over your kitchen.)
  • Once the pressure is released, remove the lid and mash the apples. Taste the applesauce and add a little pure maple syrup or honey if desired. Serve warm or refrigerate for later.
